President Trump Quotes Regarding Harley Davidson
“I don’t think they should do it. I think that Harley is an American bike. It’s an American motorcycle and they should build them in this country. They shouldn’t play cute.”
“I think they’re going to take a big hit. I really believe that Harley’s going to take a — the people that are buying Harley-Davidson, they don’t want it built in another country.”
“Those are my voters. They don’t want Harley-Davidson getting cute to make $2 more.”
Their employees and customers are already very angry at them. If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end – they surrendered, they quit! … They will be taxed like never before!” he tweeted on Tuesday.
“Harley-Davidson should stay 100% in America, with the people that got you your success. I’ve done so much for you, and then this. Other companies are coming back where they belong! We won’t forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!”
–President Trump tweet.
The president went on to claim in his Fox interview that everybody who ever bought a Harley-Davidson voted for him in the 2016 presidential election.
Harley Davidson Motorcycles
Harley Davidson already manufacturers in India, Brazil, Thailand, and Australia. To say that people don’t want Harleys built in another country, well, they are and have been for a while.
Opening a new factory to avoid the retaliatory tariffs from the European Union in response to President Trump’s tariffs was expected, especially since the European market is responsible for sixteen percent of Harley’s revenue. And that’s manufacturing! The fact is there are parts all over a Harley Davidson that were built somewhere else, whether it’s the electronics that come from Asia or clutch parts from Italy.
Harley isn’t looking to make $2 more, it’s looking to save the customer $2,200 per motorcycle. At no point has Harley Davidson said we are packing up and moving out, they simply said we are opening another factory in another country to save money for the consumer. They could simply add $2,200 to the purchase of the motorcycle and let the consumer pay for it, but they are the doing the complete opposite. The other option is to swallow the $2,200, but as I blogged before, the sole purpose of a business is to make money; nothing more, nothing less, and I’m sure President Trump understands that.
The hypocrisy of all this is that President Trump’s clothing line is made in China and Ivanka Trump’s merchandise is also made overseas, yet, Trump has not issued any tariffs on clothing. And if jobs are coming back and companies as well in record numbers, I fail to understand why he doesn’t start with himself and create untold thousands of clothing manufacturing jobs here. As a matter of fact, he should buy only steel made in the United States, and every piece of equipment that goes inside his hotels from a telephone, computer, fabrics, beds, everything, should be bought here as well. But, we know that won’t happen because he would lose money and like Harley, his only choice is to take the loss or pass it on to the consumer, or, continue to manufacture overseas.
Regardless of anyone’s political opinion regarding President Trump, there is one thing for sure; no President should attack an American business, whether it is the Red Hen or Harley Davidson, because that is not only Un-Presidential, it’s Un-American.
The stock market always react, and react they have already. If the President makes an attack on a company that drives down its stock, profitability is lessened, jobs are lost, and retirement/pension accounts go with it. That’s American?
Now, if it were only Harley Davidson, maybe there is some logic to all this, some sort of stable genius motive, but there isn’t. Polaris, makers of Indian Motorcycles has already commented publicly through their spokeswoman that they may have to open a factory in Poland for the same reasons.
Ever hear of Mid-Continent Nails? I doubt it, unless you live in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Mid-Continent Nails is the largest manufacturer of nails in the country. Once the tariffs were issued, overnight they lost 50% of their business and were forced to lay off 60 of their 500 employees. Mid-Continent is at risk of closing their doors and re-locating to Mexico and in a town of 17,000, that would be devastating to the local economy.
So, why not attack these two American companies, especially Mid-Continent as they are considering moving into Mexico, Trump’s favorite enemy? Simply put- revenge!
It has long been known that President Trump believes in revenge. It has been said by his staff in media interviews that he has a “long memory,” and the President has even mentioned that in his book “The Art of the Deal,” and at paid appearances.
So, why revenge on Harley Davidson? Remember when Harley Davidson canceled on President Trump signing Executive Orders at their manufacturing plant? Harley Davidson said they weren’t comfortable in dealing with protests. The visit was not announced publicly until Harley made reference to it, and at one point, Trump’s Administration even denied such an event, but members of his staff were already there. Like he said just a few days ago; “we won’t forget…”
A Mexican Stand-Off
I already predicted a standoff and loyalty being tested between Harley Davidson aficionados and Trump more than a year ago, and that is why you should know that one day, President Trump like every other President will be long gone from the White House. Harley Davidson will still be making motorcycles and if you don’t want a Harley because of political showmanship, there will always be metric motorcycles.
