If you have never ridden a motorcycle, you are missing out. If you have ridden a motorcycle but not at midnight on a desolate road while listening to “Midnight Rider” Live at Fillmore East, then what are you waiting for?
In 2012, riding back from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and behind schedule, my buddy and I were trying to make up for lost time. After a late all-you-can-eat prime rib dinner at Rosebud Casino in Nebraska, we jumped on our bikes and kept going. On a desolate road, far from home, lightning continued to flash across the midnight sky. That is when magically, as if Gregg Allman was riding with us, Midnight Rider came on my I-Pod. The smile on my face was instant as well as the feeling of euphoria. I felt like I was on the run and that they would not catch the midnight rider.
Music legend Gregg Allman passed away this weekend at the age of 69. He was one of the founders of the Allman Brother’s Band. He is to be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery where his brother, Duane is buried as well as bassist Berry Oakley. Both Duane and Berry were killed in motorcycle accidents in 1971 and 1972.
