AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC. (HONDA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 AND 2012 GL1800 / GOLD WING MOTORCYCLES. THE PROPELLANT WAFERS IN SOME OF THE SUBJECT INFLATORS MAY DEGRADE OVER TIME, WHICH COULD LEAD TO OVER-AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION IN THE EVENT THE AIRBAG IS ACTIVATED. OVERLY AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION CREATES EXCESSIVE INTERNAL PRESSURE WHEN THE INFLATOR IS ACTIVATED, WHICH MAY CAUSE THE INFLATOR BODY TO RUPTURE. ACTIVATION OF A NON-DESICCATED AMMONIUM NITRATE INFLATOR WITH DEGRADED PROPELLANT MAY RESULT IN AN INFLATOR RUPTURE.
AN INFLATOR RUPTURE MAY CAUSE METAL FRAGMENTS TO PASS THROUGH THE AIR BAG, WHICH MAY RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TO MOTORCYCLE OCCUPANTS.
HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AIRBAG MODULE WITH A NEW MODULE, FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MOTORCYCLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT AT 1-866-784-1870. HONDA’S NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL IS KE5.
As in all recalls, make sure to contact the dealer immediately and schedule your appointment. When a company issues a recall, there will be no charge in fixing the damaged part, so there really is no reason to ignore a recall.
There you can search for your motorcycle or car. Searches can be performed with the VIN number, vehicle identification number or with the year, make, and model. Other sections of the government website allow to search for other products such as car seats and tires.
I tried the site for the first time today, and typed “Honda Goldwing” in the search bar. Results in total were twenty-four, and dated back to 1985.
