Whew….. I do not know about you, but I am turkeyed out!!!!
The last two weeks the group I founded, M.S.A.R. (Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Riders) has been working hard to collect turkeys for our annual ride where we strap turkeys to our motorcycles and have them delivered throughout the community. We work in conjunction with Farmshare.org who always does a great job in distributing the turkeys.
Last year we collected 1,300 lbs in turkeys. This year; 6,000 lbs!!! Over 2 tons! A major success. We counted 107 motorcycles, 18 cars, and collected $1,440 dollars. Had the weather been more cooperative, we would have had more riders participating.
The average person eats 8 oz. of turkey on Thanksgiving. Thus, through our collective efforts, approximately 12,000 individuals will enjoy a turkey on Thanksgiving. In Miami-Dade County, as much as 26% of children and over 380,000 adults, go without dinner. We were able to put a dent in those numbers. Great job M.S.A.R. and thank you so much for the efforts of everyone involved. Without your donations, time, and turkeys, we could have never pulled this off.
The ride ended at the V.F.W. Post 4127 (Veteran’s of Foreign Wars) in Homestead. Participants were greeted with great music, free lunch, and cheap drinks all day. As you can see by the video, after the ride, we all had a good time and celebrated the success of the Turkey Ride & Drive.
This year, the turkeys were distributed through the V.A. Hospital and Miami-Dade County Police Department, and migrant farm workers in Homestead.
We all look forward to next year where our goal will be 10,000 plus pounds.
Have a happy & safe Thanksgiving weekend.
